Especially UI sounds are not just sounds or noises. They are there to help with communication. UI and Communication have always been CIG’s weakest areas and the UI sound design is no exception there. Again: I would bother to think about it much if I had the feeling that everyone knows what they’re doing. But that is not the case. My impression is that the poor sound designers are torn between CR’s cinematic “vision”, their own ideas and the player feedback and that there is a lack of guidance and supervision, someone who brings all the different designs in line to create a consistent and coherent world.
The choice to put the breathing into the dialogue channel which also controls ship communication shows it. I do acknowledge the fact that some actually thought about it at all. But a better solution would have been to reduce the breathing volume by 50% and probably by 80% when the character is not under exceptional stress. Hell, under normal circumstances you can even hear it over you ship engine!
We probably wouldn’t have this discussion at all then, or only discuss the appalling UI sounds.
If you’d be willing to refactor your audio concerns into a concise list then I’d be more than happy to look them over as I suspect you do have some valid points in all of the above.
